This is a terrific golf course, but pricey, and the layout, while generally terrific, has a couple of holes where it's pretty clear the architect just had to throw up his hands and hope for the best. The course is generally pretty playable, but the greens will overwhelm an average golfer. Very fast and very hard to read. The setting is beautiful, the staff exceptionally friendly and helpful, and if you can get a discount, the course is well worth playing. I will go back every time I can get a coupon -- even though I'm an hour away -- because the course is in fine condition and is a good, interesting challenge.

Best course in the area. The staff is fantastic and so is the layout. I've played many golf courses in the world and Maderas is one the best

Great Course. Was able to use a Voucher with a discount rate. Otherwise this course in well outside of my normal price range. The green are fast and the course in challenging. Not for the beginner or weekend hacker. Staff was wonderful. Cold drink and down in the turn and at the end of the round. Service with taling you clubs from you car, cleaning the clubs after the round, and a ride back to my car. What more do you desire from a country club atmosphere without the $500 a mouth plus price tag!

Great day on a wonderful course in every aspect. Conditions perfect and the layout was challenging, but very fair. Beautiful vistas from the holes. This is a great course and you will not be disappointed.

I was pleasantly surprised with the course conditions given the time of year. The fairways and greens were in good shape and painted green, which made for a beautiful contrast to the dormant bermuda rough.

A great course. Greens had been serif iced ten days earlier so were a little rough, but fees were reduced accordingly which gave us a great deal. Several holes with big elevation changes off tee - impressive views.

Maderas is the hidden gem in the San Diego area. My wife and I have played all over the world and Maderas rates right at the top. The overall experience is first class starting from the moment you are greeted by the outside staff and pro shop professionals. They provide personal attention to every golfer and try to make each experience special. The golf course is difficult but fair (a little local knowledge helps on a few holes) and some of the pin placements are amazing. My favorite holes are 14 through 18 that show the Johnny Miller influence on the design. The golf course super and his staff do a fantastic job and have added some recent touches of class to add to it's beauty and playability. The food is also fantastic. The Wednesday Burger Night is a local favorite which sells out. We are proud to be Members.

My last 18-hole round was over 4 months prior to playing Mederas, and I did play it on the 1st of March. The course was scenic and and challenging. However the fairways were dry, and the rough was dormant. Therefore the ball tended to run and often through the rough and into trouble. The greens were a little tricked up, but not like a Nicklaus course.

Played here several times over the past few years. I don't get to play golf as much anymore, so I am more interested in quality, and less concerned with price. This is a fun and challenging layout, especially around the greens. Probably the closest to a "Masters" type course that I will ever play. It has become my go to course with friends and family when they visit SD.

tees for all levels of player, choose the right one or course will play too tough. course knowledge is important as holes play longer and shorter then the yardage would suggest, up hill carry, wind factor or down hill play. It is a canyon type of course with some holes calling for straight shots as a must. If your not hitting it straight bring a lot of balls. friendliest staff I've experienced in forty years of playing golf.

The course had a two for one when I played it with a friend. great value at two for $165 instead of one. But the course is worth $165 and the drive from the LA area of ~ 150 miles. The practice facility is one of the best anywhere - range, chip[ping, pitching, sand traps, etc.

We played on a Tuesday on an "all you can play" deal. The course was fantastic. The staff was very helpful (knowing we wanted to play another round after lunch). We have played many courses around the country and this one ranks in our Top 5. The price was great given the quality and compared to other courses in the area. We would highly recommend Maderas!

The course had a military rate which made me especially happy. The course was in great shape and not a lot of players for a Wednesday afternoon. This was a challenging course and not for beginner golfers. We of course had a few beers after the round and you must try the home made potato chips they are wonderful..

Outstanding course and courteous staff. Visually intimidating but fair. Calls for accuracy and imagination. Few flat lies. One of the best courses in Southern CA.

Great promotion for a birthday round. Birthday person plays FREE with another person playing full rack rate. ($135 weekday) We just split the cost. So for $67.50 each it was an incredibly great bargain and I'm looking for other golfers, who have an upcoming birthday, to share this experience with again. Terrific staff as well.

One of the best mountain courses. Greens were difficult but incredible. Views and layout spectacular. Tough golf, and worth every stroke.

Day 3 = 100 days, 100 courses (Saturday, March 16, 2019)
While eating lunch, Don Petty and I were discussing our upcoming round. Don had read a lot about the course and in particular the greens and seemed to be a little apprehensive. Since there are no rules other than I have to play 18, we decided to play a 2 person best ball format. I was definitely OK with that because I wanted to break my bad mojo.
We had a ball.
For the second day in a row I was joined in the foursome by two Canadians (which border am I near anyway?). Although half our age, they were a lot of fun and put up with two old men. The course was very challenging in that it forced you to use every club in your bag. You had to keep the driver in the bag on quite a few holes as trouble was right where you didn't want it.
As Don had predicted, the greens were incredibly fast. I wish I knew what they read on the meter as many putts just kept rolling and rolling and rolling with just a tap.
Playing 2 person best ball we shot a respectable 82. My encouraging sign was that we started and ended with me shooting a natural par. So I am encouraged for today.
3 Balls lost so that brings the tallies to 11 Balls lost and 278 strokes.
